Has Thomas Becket’s treasured ‘little book’ been uncovered?


Becket headed north, earning it to Lincoln in two days, then put on the tough, darkish woollen tunic of a local religious order, adopted the title Brother Christian, and turned south into the wilderness of the fens. His companions have been genuine lay brothers, equipped to lead him by the marshes and waterways to isolated hermitages and priories, wherever he would be able to plan his future moves. Experienced he been caught, the primary Becket expert Prof Anne Duggan suggests, the king could have chosen any punishment he liked – castration, blinding, even death.
